Who knows if Morgan Avenue ever had sidewalks? It sure doesn’t now and there is no safe option for pedestrians or cyclists to make it between Highway 41 and Green River Road on Morgan Avenue. To make a left turn off of Morgan Avenue requires slowing to a stop in the passing lane which has caused many rear-end collisions and taking a left onto Morgan Avenue during commute hours is nearly impossible. Does the Indiana Department of Motor Vehicles still believe in deterring pedestrian and bicycle traffic from state routes for reasons of safety? What if a State Route is the only path between the Evansville Psychiatric Children’s Center and the largest virgin forest within city limits in the United States?

The North of Morgan Avenue (NOMA) Neighborhood Association was born out of a conversation with Zach Hernonimus on August 1st at Joe Brewski’s. He suggested forming a neighborhood association in an area that was then unrepresented through the United Neighborhoods of Evansville. With the generous support of UNOE, a mailing went out to approximately 220 homes in the area between North Boeke Road and North Dexter Avenue (with includes North Roosevelt, North Saint James Boulevard, North Ruston Avenue, North Villa Drive, and North Thomas Avenue) and NOMA had its first meeting on March 16th, 2024.

Article II in our Bylaws is: Our purpose is to promote the safety, improvement, and collective voice of our neighborhood.

Our current hope is that there can be an efficient coordination on the state and municipal levels of:

  1. the planned improvements to Boeke Road
  2. the funded improvements to the intersections of Morgan/Stockwell and Morgan/Boeke
  3. the potential improvements to Morgan Avenue between I-69 and Highway 41.

Our request it that INDOT keep in mind, both for the time during construction and as long-term traffic solutions:

  1. the difficult and unsafe left-hand turn access both onto and off of Morgan Avenue at intersections unassisted by a traffic light.
  2. the exclusion of pedestrian and bicycle safety infrastructure along most of Morgan Avenue.

“Livable communities that support bicycling and walking are a high priority of the U.S. Department of Transportation. A livable community is one that provides safe and convenient transportation choices to all citizens, whether it’s by walking, bicycling, transit, or driving.”
