Westside Improvement Association
Our mission statement: “Exerting influence upon public and private sectors to accomplish those objectives which will enhance the natural environment of the west side of Vanderburgh County and serve the common good of the residents.”
In 1976, Evansville and Vanderburgh County were faced with questions of strengthening infrastructure, residential and commercial development, and intelligent growth – much like today! That summer a group of individuals, the Westwood Garden Club, Audubon Society, and Operation City Beautiful came together to form the Westside Improvement Association (WIA). WIA was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in 1978.
Four decades plus have passed and WIA still works to improve the quality of life for those who live, work, or go to school on Evansville’s west side. Current projects are the Helfrich Gateway Garden, Howell Wetlands, Clem Frank Nature Preserve, Shirley James Memorial, and the Burdette-USI Trail as well as many other small projects on the Westside. Most of these projects are funded by grants and our Fall Festival booth.
If you care about transportation, drainage issues, smart growth, urban sprawl, spot rezoning, or preserving the natural beauty of the land, Westside Improvement Association would love to have you as a member.
