Improvement Association
The JNIA’s mission is to promote improvement of the area through education, community participation and exertion of influence on the public and private sectors.
Jacobsville is a lively, primarily blue-collar neighborhood, located in the north-central area of Evansville. The name Jacobsville came from the Hannah Jacobs family. Jacobs was widowed in 1827 with six children. She acquired land in an area bounded by Columbia, Oakley, Harriett, and Missouri streets for a town, but the close proximity of Evansville and Lamasco prevented the development. The family was involved in dairy farming from the 1860s until the 1890s. The farmhouse was located at what is now 609-617 West Maryland Street.
Officially annexed in 1868, Jacobsville is a mix of rich history and up-and-coming business. With a population of nearly 7,000 residents and an estimated 6,000 jobs, it is a high-energy environment with a lot of commuters. Although many people move in and out of our area for work and play daily, we are considered a walkable/bikeable neighborhood and have a beautiful complete street (North Main Street) with protected biking and pedestrian tracks.
Within our boundaries, we house schools, businesses, churches, wonderful restaurants, and some of the area’s larger corporations. We boast being home to Garvin Park, Bosse Field, Dream Center Evansville, and the new Deaconess Aquatic Center.
One of our most appealing features is the ability to live, learn, and play – all within our boundaries. Northside Business Association Halloween, Streets Alive, and the North Main Street Christmas Parade bring many families to our area. There are new adventures popping up in our neighborhood all the time and our residents are proud to share it all with visitors and commuters from near and far.
The JNIA is a network of neighborhood residents, businesses and industry, the professions and government working together for progress and a positive community image in areas of housing, public safety, economic development, justice, health, education, quality of life, and the promotion of neighborliness.
