CHAIN

Cedar Hall Association for Improvement of the Neighborhood, Inc. (CHAIN)

CHAIN’S boundaries are: Pigeon Creek to First Avenue, First Avenue South to Tennessee Street, Tennessee Street West to Fulton Avenue, Fulton Avenue South to Division Street and Division Street West to Pigeon Creek.

CHAIN was founded on December 12, 1991, by a group of residents (Linda Jones, Carlos and Juanita Wilson); the principal of Cedar Hall School (Don DeWeese); Fulton Housing Development (Cindy Collins); a Judge (William Miller); and Area businesses Operation City Beautiful (Ann Ennis and Kalah Jerstad), Pat Costlett’s Furniture Store (Pat Costlett), Zeidler’s Floral (Al Dauble) and Royal Supermarket (Pete Rupp.)

Meeting of CHAIN residents

One of the reasons everyone came together was to lobby for the Fulton Avenue Improvement Project. It had been talked about for twenty-five plus years and nothing had come to fruition. Within a few years of the Neighborhood Association being formed, the Fulton Avenue Project began.  This was due to neighborhood residents banding together as one voice.

The Neighborhood Association residents were the reason Cedar Hall School was not closed.  Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation was talking about closing some schools and Cedar Hall Elementary was one of them.  The Superintendent had several open forums to discuss their decision to close some schools; one was held at Cedar Hall and it was a packed house.   The residents of CHAIN rallied together as one and let their voice be heard!  Less than an hour following the forum at Cedar Hall, Cathy Gray called Linda Jones to tell her that the Superintendent had changed his mind and Cedar Hall would not be closed nor torn down.  That was a proud day for our neighborhood!
